According to the new report CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), an unhealthy diet may lead to the risk of cancer. In a press released on Tuesday, the CDC states that obesity has been widely recognized as a global epidemic, nearly affecting about 40% of all cancer cases in the United States are linked to excess weight and obesity.
We live in a society where excess weight is more and more the social norm- even though our own evidence has shown that being obese can have drastic health consequences.
“According to recent reports, health experts predicted that in the coming years obesity will soon overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of cancer in the US – and -shockingly-the UK might one day follow suit.”
So it’s clear that those spare pounds aren’t a mere overflow car park for excess doughnuts.
But that raises a crucial question: how exactly does obesity increase our risk of cancer?
At least 2.6 million people each year dies as a result of being overweight and obese.
The study revealed some daunting reports:
- Nearly 2/3 of Americans adults are currently defined as overweight or obese.
- Diagnoses of excess weight – related cancer rose between, 2004-2014.
According to the new report from the CDC and the U.S National Career Institute, these 13 obesity- related cancers made up about 40 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States in 2014.
Although the study finds that being obese or overweight is more associated with cancer cases involving more than 630,000 Americans in 2014. Excluding colon cancer, these cancers are increased by 7% from 2005 to 2014. During the same time, rates of non-obesity-related cancers dropped, the findings showed.
Women also faced a disproportionate risk of being diagnosed with such cancers. More than half (55%) of all the cancers diagnosed in women are linked to being over, compared with a quarter (24%) in men.
Although the rate of new cancer cases has decreased since the 1990s, but increases in overweight and obesity-related cancers are likely slowing this progress, the researchers said.
What did the CDC say?
According to one of the international news agency the Agence France-Presse, CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald said the findings “are a cause for concern” because 71 percent of Americans adults are either overweight or obese.
Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, who is the director of the CDC, said that
“A majority of Americans adults weigh more than recommended- and being overweight or obese puts people at higher risk for a number of cancer. By getting to and keeping a healthy weight, we all can play a role in cancer prevention.”
What Steps can be taken to overcome obesity leading to cancer?
Nearly all of the evidence linking obesity to cancer risk comes from observational study. However data from observational studies can be difficult to interpret and cannot definitely establish that obesity causes cancer.
That is because obese people may differ and it is possible that these other differences-rather than their body weight – are what explains their different cancer risk.
This report is a Real wake-up-call for all the Americans to know that there are steps that everyone can take for cancer prevention and better health.
According to the researchers, there are a number of ways to help including:
- A healthy balanced diet full of fresh vegetables, fruits, beans and essential vitamins
- Maintain a healthy weight be physically active
- Protect your skin from the sun, use sunscreen when you need to spend extended time in the sun
- Avoid the use of tobacco
- Receiving appropriate immunizations (HPV and Hepatitis vaccines)
- Practice safer sex and avoid risky behavior
- Limit your Alcohol consumption
- Add some color to your diet- try to add more colorful veggies, fruits into your diet
- Cut back on Red meats
- Participate in cancer screenings according to recommended guidelines
